"And I don't," Vexen informed them, his upper lip curled and his nose wrinkled, "want to be disturbed! The work I'm about to do is very sensitive! Don't disturb me!"

The door slammed.

There was a silence that lasted one second, two, three, and then Zexion said, low-voiced and strained, "And of course, you wouldn't even think of asking politely, would you."

Lexaeus sipped his tea in lieu of having to agree.

That Zexion was irritable about it for most of the evening was no surprise to Lexaeus; Zexion didn't get angry easily, but he got annoyed faster than most, especially with acts of discourtesy. Worse, though, was when it disrupted any plans that Zexion felt he had, or if it at least made Zexion feel he had to give courtesy back when he had received none.

Still, it was Zexion, so Lexaeus knew what was coming before Zexion actually acted. It was after their meal now, and Zexion was doing the dishes in something that almost resembled a comfortable silence, but for the occasional mutter that Zexion didn't quite hide. Lexaeus didn't quite smile at it, instead just fiddled idly with a puzzle and waited.

Soon enough, Zexion was drying his hands; not much longer than that, and Zexion was coming over.

Right on schedule, it seemed. Zexion stood in front of him and seemed to ponder, then sighed. "We'll need to be quiet," he said.

"Mm," Lexaeus agreed, and rose.

They did not make love, exactly; there never was much of that sort of thing in it. But Zexion was most comfortable with a routine on how their days went: when they woke, when they studied, when they ate, and everything else, and it was, Lexaeus always felt, good when Zexion was comfortable.

He put his hands on Zexion's hips and tilted his head slightly, watching Zexion's face as he moved. It had emptied, gone calm and distant, eyes closed and mouth open very slightly. Lexaeus watched it in fascination; interesting, always interesting, how much and how little showed.

Zexion moaned, low, and Lexaeus raised a finger to his mouth. "Be courteous," he said, quiet, and pretended to be looking somewhere else before Zexion could open his eyes and scowl.

"And how," Lexaeus asked over a breakfast of rice and fish the next morning, "did your experiment go?"

"Hm? That?" Vexen said, disgustedly. "Never mind that! I'm done with the whole thing. Today will be different!"

Zexion tapped the rice paddle lightly against Vexen's bowl. "You're welcome," he said flatly.

"Hm?"

"For breakfast."

"Of course I am," Vexen said. "Anyway, I'll be working hard again today, so don't bother me."

Lexaeus cleared his throat. "Of course," he said firmly, and for the time being, the peace held.
